Info

Bare Knuckle Mobile is an official SOR game produced in 2008 by SEGA with music by Yuzo Koshiro, designed for play on Java-compatible mobile phone devices. Only ever released in Japan, the game is essentially a remake of SOR1 with higher-resolution graphics. Once again, the story involves our heroes taking on the darkness of the evil Syndicate, in order to stop Mr. X taking over!

There are 2 playable characters: Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding, but Adam fans needn't worry too much: he appears as a training guide in the initial tutorial, and joins you later on in the game to help you out as a CPU-controlled player! (though sadly, he still isn't playable) The game sports some fantastic new, official sprites which have re-imagined some classic SOR1 enemies in a SOR2/3 style, and also features a brand new boss character called Harakiri. There are some new sounds and musical arrangements (though the music is MIDI and fairly low quality). The stages range from completely new to improved versions of those found in SOR1.

Bare Knuckle Mobile is controlled largely with a one-handed interface, in a slightly new interpretation of classic SOR action. In order to attack, you have to approach the enemy and then continue to tap the direction key toward them. Simple enough, and it works surprisingly well. For a pre-smartphone mobile game, this really isn't too bad, and definitely worth a look for any true SOR fan!

There were 4 different versions of Bare Knuckle Mobile released. Due to the extreme rarity of the game (Phones being discontinued and no ports) and the unlikelihood that it will ever see a Western release, you can download it here. Make sure you grab the Kemulator program if you want to run these on a PC, though they will work on a Java-compatible mobile phone (tested and works fine on a Nokia N80).

The definitive and best version of the game by far, is the Nokia N73 version, previously only available through the Foma 703i/903i (i-Mode) subscription service in Japan.

The Sony Ericsson k700 and s700 versions are fairly similar, with some scaled back differences (slightly different music, slower gameplay).

Finally, the Sony Ericsson k300 version is designed for older phones, and as a result, the game suffers from some drastic changes and a lot poorer quality overall. Check out this screenshot from the k300 version compared to the others here and you'll see what I mean:

STREETS OF RAGE MOBILE - ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Streets of Rage Mobile is a fan-produced ROM hack of the game which provides a complete English translation, among other enhancements, which can be played on most Java-enabled mobile phones, as well as through emulators. The translation was originally started by sharpshark, and then largely completed by gsaurus with help from DigitalDuck and Joseph Heinrich.

In my opinion this is the definitive version to play for English-speaking gamers. If you're going to play through the game, use this ROM.

So what's new?

- English translation
- SOR2 controls, selectable on options screen
- Adam always present, selectable on options screen (with Adam game seems to have more enemies as well)
- Difficulty slightly increased (enemies move faster on normal and hard difficulties)

SOR2 controls are:

Use Z, X, C, V for special, attack, jump, police respectively. Alternatively use Q, W, E, R, or 1, 2, 3, 4
Use 'A' for left soft key, and 'S' or 'Escape' for right soft key. Use enter all the way on the menus navigation

Again, you can use a program like JoyToKey to emulate keyboard input.
